This is a video lesson by Dave Goodman (PhD) showing you several simple steps for generating a large number of your own unique syncopated eighth-note / quaver figures, and for developing those figures for improvisation around the drumset in soloistic ways. You will learn to ‘fill in the gaps’ in syncopated eighth-note / quaver figures in ways that Dave learned from Jim Chapin, to convert these figures into triplets, and to play them around the drumset using your bass drum foot as a ‘third hand’. You’ll improve your ability to creatively improvise some hip and original interactive solo and ensemble figures using the full range of your instrument, and your new figures will also have deep conventional roots. This video lesson includes the following media:

  • Video (mp4, 00:36:11, 181.1 MB)
  • Audio (mp3, 00:35:58, 51.8 MB)
  • Exercises (PDF, 8 pages, 3.5 MB)

The techniques described by Dave Goodman (PhD) in this lesson are designed to overcome the problem of what is commonly referred to as 'four-way coordinated independence'. To do this, Dave has implemented a new take on the single stroke roll rudiment by naming the combinations of notes that require you to coordinate your four limbs for a variety of applications on the drumset. This was originally presented in Dave's doctoral thesis under the headings 'Grouping and Ordering of Limbs' and 'Omni-adroitness'. Dave will teach you how to understand and employ the new names, bringing your four limbs into musical accordance with one another. You can also use these note names to analyse different kinds of drumming, and to learn new pieces and styles, especially those that tend to involve more difficult coordination, such as funk, Latin American, and polyrhythmic jazz comping. This video lesson includes the following media:

  • Video (mp4, 00:33:24, 178.5 MB)
  • Audio (mp3, 00:30:30, 47.3 MB)
  • Exercises (PDF, 5 pages, 3.3 MB)

This is a PDF copy of the handout Dave gave to attendees of his drum clinic Dave presented for the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music on 14 March 2015.

Dave demonstrate some transcriptions of Max Roach, Tony Williams, Dave Weckl, Gary Novak, Zach Danziger, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Buddy Rich. He also briefly explains his analysis of those transcriptions in light of the idea of filling in the quaver or 8th-note gaps that he learned from Jim Chapin in New York in 2002.

Topics include: • Adapting figures from the past (1:11) • Filling in the 8th-note / quaver gaps (3:32) • Accents around the drums (6:58) • Converting to triplets (7:57) • Putting everything together in improvisation (9:37)

Special thanks to Eric Dunan and all at Wollongong Con, and to Sonor Drums & Bosphorus Cymbals for providing giveaways on the day. Thanks also to Remo Drumheads and Vater Drumsticks for their ongoing support.

Highlights from the clinic can be found here: https://youtu.be/1ks7QPeJuy4

This clinic is in several parts.

Part One A - Coordination: The Notes of the Drums (2:53) - The presentation of a new system for understanding and improving drumset coordination.

Part One B - Coordination: The New Single Stroke Roll (20:33) - A practical application of The Notes of the Drums to bring the drummer's four limbs into greater accord with one another.

Part Two - Repertoire: Filling in the 8th-note / quaver & triplet gaps (47:07) - An explanation and further development of Jim Chapin's principle of filling in 8th-note / quaver gaps in syncopated figures. I use figures by Zach Danziger, Vinnie Colaiuta and Andy Gander that I've transcribed to illustrate these points.

Part Three - Repertoire: Music is Infinite (01:05:04) - An explanation of ways to tap into the infinite reservoir of music in order to develop your own interesting and unique figures. Featuring an impromptu performance from student Abby Constable.

Also included are excerpts from the opening solo piece 'Symplegades: The Dove' as well as 'Entelechies' (1:29) and 'Maitreya' (1:24:10).

With special thanks to Sonor Drums and Bosphorus Cymbals for their generous support of this event.
